Student: “Master, I've noticed that people often doubt or criticize those who strive to do remarkable things, especially when their actions do not align with what is expected of them. How should one deal with the put downs and skepticism while striving for greatness?"
Master: “The doubt of others, much like the gusts that attempt to extinguish a flame, can serve to strengthen the fire within, provided that the flame is guarded and fed by a robust code of honor. Such a code transcends personal interest and societal expectations, guiding one to act in accordance with higher principles and values. When one's actions are rooted in such a code, external skepticism loses its power to deter. Instead, it becomes a mirror reflecting the steadfastness of one’s commitment to their path.”
Student: “But what if this leads to isolation or misunderstanding from others? Is the pursuit of greatness worth such a price?”
Master: “The path toward greatness is often solitary, not because it is lonesome, but because it is less traveled. Misunderstandings arise as a result of the observer's inability to perceive the higher purpose behind what they are witnessing. Remember, it is not for the great to seek approval or understanding from the crowd; their compass is their code, which guides them through the tumult of public opinion. The value of this pursuit lies in the fulfillment of living a life aligned with profound principles that elevate it to its highest potential! The esteem of the masses is fleeting; the integrity of one's honor, eternal.”
Student: “Then... how can I develop or find the right code to live by?”
Master: “Start by identifying the values and principles that resonate deeply with you, those that stir a sense of purpose and direction in your heart. Seek wisdom from those that have walked the path before you, not to copy their steps, but to inspire your own. Test these principles in the small decisions you face daily, allowing them to guide your actions. Over time, with reflection and experience, your code will emerge, refined and true. It is a personal journey, one of introspection and challenge, but it is through this process that you will find the compass that will guide you to greatness.”
Student: “Sometimes I worry that in adopting a code but failing to live up to it, not only would my efforts be in vain, but I'd be left with the guilt of failing myself. Wouldn't it all be for nothing, master?
Master: “On the contrary boy! The pursuit of a code of honor is not a testament to perfection, but a commitment to continual growth and improvement! Failure to live up to one's code at times is inevitable, for the path is fraught with setbacks. However, it is in the recognition of these failures and the resolve to rise above them, that the true essence of the code is revealed. Each misstep is an opportunity for learning, each failure a lesson in resilience! The greatness of an individual is not measured by their infallibility, but by their ability to persevere, to remain committed to their principles in spite of the challenges before them. It is through striving, failing, and striving once more that ordinary men become heroes, guided by the unwavering light of their code.”
